Window dressings, accessories & wall colours – Balance in the combo is key

For a unique interior design solution, we suggest combining window dressing and hardware accessories such as screens, mock drops, tie backs, stiffened valances and hold backs with the correct wall colour. Design details such as headings, shaped hems and tassels should be kept to a minimum and applied in the correct context, but they are great ways to freshen things up without re-doing an entire space.

Roman blinds or screens are also a good and more timeless way to brighten a space without overwhelming the room. Elements that are too “matchy” or too co-ordinated might seem excessive and take away from the design elements in the room. The positive side to using these accessories is the fact that they can easily be replaced when outdated.  Most of the time shops only supply standard finishes, detailing, sizes and headings to cut costs and with limited options to choose form and this is where professional interior designers come in.

We can broaden the choice spectrum dramatically by manufacturing or sourcing fabrics and accessories from various suppliers and locations. This include items such as curtains, throws, blinds, valances, tie backs, wall clocks, tables, chairs, paintings, photographs, fabric, lights and so much more.

The correct combo of wall colours, window dressings and accessories plays an important role in the look and feel of a space, especially a small space. Ceilings and window dressings in the same or lighter colour as the walls create a feeling of continuity and makes the room feel larger. Natural light is also very important in a small room, thus use surfaces and objects where light can be reflected against such as light-coloured walls or mirrors. The correct lighting source such as up-lighters rather than pendants, table or floor lamps and even task specific lighting also plays an important role in creating a sense of space and openness.

Complete redecoration of a room could be expensive and it may not be practical to re-do all the window dressings for example, but subtle changes to an existing interior can have a great effect on the atmosphere in a room. Swap scatter cushions, throws, loose furniture, art pieces or even curtains around in different rooms of your home. Mock curtains can be used in conjunction with a working curtain to add visual interest without costing a fortune, because mock curtains use a lot less fabric and can easily be changed with each season or refurbishment.

A safe way is to combine neutral colours with accent colours, but if you want to be daring combine a few contrasting accent colours as well. If you are not sure how to create the look, use a printed fabric as your focal point and add plain colours to match the print. Instead of choosing one or two colours, select a pallet of neutral colours to create balance, depth and softness where dark blues and greys are popular; and add a combination of rich, earthy accent colours and prints to express your creativity.

Not only the colour scheme but also the accessories play an important role in creating a specific atmosphere in a room. More affordable accessories like scatter cushions, throws and rugs can easily bring changes with the seasons and are quick to replace. For a more dramatic approach you could change the colour of one or more walls, apply a striking wallpaper or even install wall cladding to create a feature wall to change the look and feel of a room. Anything is possible, be daring, experiment and always be open for creative combinations. Just remember that balance is the key to a successful combination.
