Decorating is really about re-creating your way of life, a living masterpiece that nourishes the soul. That’s what all this is about, not just what’s in and what’s out.
Our houses have become such an important part of the modern day living, we spend most of our time at work or running from one activity to the next, that when we finally get home we want to get the feeling of “home” and not “house”, a feeling of fulfilment.
Make sure that the interior design of your home has YOU written all over it, but in such a way that the rest of the fam living there or friends visiting, will feel welcome and intrigued to enter and enjoy the space with you.
Think you don’t have the “moola” to spend on an entirely new interior? Wrong – here are a few tips that will make a big difference, without spending a fortune.
Same old, same old. You get so use to how and where elements are placed that you don’t appreciate the beauty of them. Change things up. Swap your lounge around; there is no need for the big couch against the wall. Use it as a room divider with a server behind and put your occasional chairs against the wall to compliment your favourite artwork or family portrait.
Less is more. Select key elements to place on display in a room or area. In a few weeks you can change them up and display something else. Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.
Crisp colours, particularly white, is a great way to physically brighten up a room, but also to make the experience of the room lighter. Colour can change the entire atmosphere of a space – be daring, if you don’t like it – paint over it.
Bring old things to life. Renovated furniture adds a dash of personality and individuality to a space. Not only are they great conversation starters, the cost to sand an old table vs buying a new one, is worlds apart.
Textiles and textures. We live in a world of abundant textures and fabrics that all give a different look and feel to a space. Mix and match colours, textures and patterns in such a way that they not only compliment the surrounding elements, but also to be a statement. Just keep in mind that there is a fine line between tacky and bold. Use curtaining to soften a room, decorate with different shapes and sizes scatters or rugs to keep it interesting.
Remember:
- Re-Upholster instead of purchasing new items.
- Select a feature wall – use wallpaper, cladding or a collage of art to make a statement
- Not all you scatters have to be designer fabrics – mix and match the old with the new
- Use different light sources to keep the interior interesting. A minimum of three different sources of light per room.
- Allocate specific uses for specific spaces to avoid having a multipurpose space that is an eye sore – that no one ends up using.
People ignore design, that ignores people – so design a space for the unique you, a home to live in, a lounge to relax in, a bedroom to rest and a garden to enjoy and grow.
